Planning Ahead
When I decided to make the move to Australia, I knew I wanted to be smart about costs. I was aware that I most likely wouldn’t have a job right away, so it made sense to try to save as much as possible in the first few months. One of the biggest monthly expenses is rent, and that’s where I realized petsitting could be a huge help.
My brother has been petsitting through the app Trusted House Sitters for a while, and hearing about his experiences inspired me to give it a try. Before I moved, I even created an account and started taking petsits in Florida to get some reviews and experience under my belt. I was so dedicated that I even gave up my Fourth of July to take more sits! It felt worth it to get prepared for life in Australia.
Our First Petsit in Australia
Before we even arrived, we were able to secure a petsit outside of Sydney for nearly two months—an amazing opportunity that immediately reduced the stress of moving abroad. Knowing that we wouldn’t have to pay rent outside a major city made the idea of living without a job feel a lot more manageable.
We are looking after two energetic terrier dogs and a sweet Siamese cat. The owners were incredibly welcoming—they picked us up from the train station and spent two days showing us the ropes before heading off on their own adventure. It was a great way to ease into life in a new country while also getting to know the neighborhood and routines of the pets.
The Win-Win Situation
Petsitting has been such a win-win situation. We care for their home and animals while they are away, and in return, we don’t have to pay rent. Beyond the financial benefits, it’s been a unique way to immerse ourselves in Australian life. We get a real feel for living in a local neighborhood, managing daily responsibilities, and caring for animals—a fun and rewarding experience that adds structure to our days while we settle in and search for jobs.
Lessons Learned So Far
From this experience, I’ve learned a lot about responsibility, adaptability, and patience. Each pet has its own personality and quirks, which keeps life interesting and fun. Petsitting has also been a great reminder of how rewarding it can be to connect with animals—whether it’s taking long walks with the dogs or sharing quiet moments with the cat.
Additionally, living in someone else’s home has taught me respect for routines, attention to detail, and gratitude for the trust placed in us. It’s a completely different perspective than renting a traditional apartment, and it’s helped me feel more confident navigating life in a new country.
Settling In, One Paw at a Time
Having our first petsitting spot secured before arriving has made the transition to life in Australia so much smoother. It gives us stability while we search for jobs and settle into the area. I’m excited to see what other petsitting opportunities may come our way and to continue exploring new neighborhoods, meeting locals, and enjoying the adventures of this move—all while surrounded by furry friends.
Petsitting has been more than just a cost-saving strategy—it’s become a key part of our Australian adventure, combining practicality with the simple joy of caring for animals.
