Just a Girl in Love with the World

Living and loving fearlessly

First Impressions of Life in Australia

Experiencing What I Researched

I did plenty of research before moving to Australia—like most people do before packing up their lives and flying across the world. I thought I knew what I was getting into: sunny beaches, unique wildlife, and the famous laid-back lifestyle. But no matter how many articles you read or videos you watch, nothing truly compares to living it yourself.

One of the first things that really stood out to me was the housing. I had read about it online, but I didn’t realize just how cold it could feel inside. More specifically—the insulation, or lack of it. I never expected to be shivering indoors while escaping the outdoor chill. Yes, there’s central heating, but because it’s so expensive, it isn’t used much. Instead, most people just layer up and power through. Coming from Florida, where I was spoiled with constant warmth and reliable air conditioning, this has been a big adjustment. Luckily, I’ve found myself living in my snuggie, which makes it a little more bearable.

An Active Lifestyle Everywhere

Another impression that struck me right away was how many people spend time outside. No matter what time of day, the streets, sidewalks, parks, and beaches are full of life. Australians really embrace an active lifestyle, which I knew before arriving, but it’s so different to witness it with my own eyes.

The healthy food culture here reflects that same lifestyle. Grocery stores are stocked with clean-ingredient products that would’ve been expensive or hard to find back home. For example, in the U.S. I paid around six dollars for Almond Malk, one of the only clean almond milks available. Here, I found a very similar option for about three Australian dollars—a refreshing surprise for my grocery budget!

Shopping, But Bigger

Something else that stood out to me is the sheer size of the shopping centers. They’re huge. A single center here can have everything you could possibly need—gyms, grocery stores, H&M, coffee shops, massage centers, and more—all under one roof. Back in Florida, these would be spread across multiple locations, but here it’s all in one place.

Getting Around Made Simple

I’ve also been impressed by the public transport system. It’s clean, affordable, and convenient. The trains are frequent, and they make going into the city so much easier than I imagined. One quirky detail I love? You can move the seats forward or backward depending on which direction you’d like to face. It’s a small thing, but it makes the ride feel a little more personal.

Wrapping Up My First Impressions

These are just a few of the things that have stood out to me since arriving, even after all the research I did beforehand. Moving to a new country comes with its fair share of adjustments, but that’s part of the adventure. For now, I’m soaking in every little detail—from oversized shopping centers to snuggie-filled nights—and feeling grateful for this new chapter in Australia.
