A Summer With No Plans for Love
The summer of 2023 was supposed to be all about me—backpacking through Europe, exploring new places, and enjoying the freedom of traveling on my own terms. I had no intentions of getting a boyfriend that summer. But sometimes, life doesn’t follow your plans.
In early July, I met up with a friend from Spain, and together we decided to head to Santorini, Greece. At the same time, he was traveling through the Greek islands with his university friends. Neither of us knew that our paths were about to cross in the most unexpected way.
A Hostel, an Accent, and a Chance Meeting
We both happened to be staying at the same camping hostel in Santorini. One of our roommates was from England, and when he and his friends overheard her accent, it sparked an instant conversation. That’s how we all ended up meeting.
Soon after, our groups decided to go out together, and just like that, we were spending almost every day as a tight little crew. It felt effortless—laughing, exploring, and swapping stories as if we’d known each other much longer than a few days.
Conversations That Changed Everything
Even in those early days, there was something different about him. We’d sit and have long conversations over coffee, talking about religion, sunsets, and love—the kind of talks that felt deep and rare, especially while traveling. Our friends could see the connection, but we took things slow, focusing on the friendship first.
It wasn’t until the fourth night that he finally kissed me. By then, everyone knew it was coming. Just as things were starting to unfold, he had to leave to continue his travels. Part of me thought it might all end there, but we kept messaging each other, and that’s when I realized this was more than a summer fling.
From Santorini to London
Months later, during my fall semester back home, I couldn’t stop thinking about him. One day in class, I did something bold—I booked a ticket to London for right before Christmas.
When I landed, he was waiting for me at the airport. We were both nervous, but as soon as we were together, it felt natural. He showed me around his university town in York, where we explored the city, shared new experiences, and even took a trip to Dublin one weekend. Before I flew home, I met his family, which made everything feel even more real.
Where We Are Now
What started as a chance meeting in a hostel in Greece turned into something I never could have imagined. Our story has crossed borders and time zones, but it’s built on adventure, trust, and saying “yes” to opportunities when they come.
Now, we’re in Australia, building a new chapter together. Sometimes I think back to that July in Santorini and laugh—how I swore I wasn’t looking for a boyfriend, yet ended up finding the person who has become such a big part of my life.
